Applied Science (Diploma)

What does the course involve?

A mixture of Physics, Chemistry and Biology presented in a fun, engaging, exciting and inspiring way. The course is equivalent to two A Levels and allows you to present your work in different ways, such as live presentations to class, role play scenarios, video production or poster design, so you can showcase and express your units creatively. Applied Science students are encouraged to work together as a team and give each other feedback so everyone feels comfortable in the class environment. There is also a lot of support available from teachers if you do struggle with any topic, plus opportunities for challenge too if you’re excelling in units. Applied Science is studied as a Diploma, allowing you to combine it with another BTEC or A Level subject.

Course Outline

You will work through practical exercises and the study of past key experiments, to develop and demonstrate a deeper appreciation of the skills, knowledge and understanding of how science works. You complete eight units from the following, spanning the two years.

Module 1: Principle & Application of Science
Module 2: Practical Scientific Techniques

Module 5: Principle & Application of Science 2
Module 6: Vocational Research Project
Module 8: Physiology of Human Body Systems
Module 9: Human Regulation and Reproduction
Module 10: Biological Molecules and Metabolic Pathways
Module 11: Genetics and Genetic Engineering
Module 12: Diseases and Infections

For your investigative project, you will choose your own topic and write a research proposal.

Assessment
The BTEC structure requires students to complete a mixture of internally assessed assignments and externally assessed examinations.
