This two-year BTEC Level 3 course is designed for school leavers who are passionate about sport and keen to develop a career in coaching, sports development, or the wider sports industry. The course provides a strong foundation of theoretical knowledge alongside hands-on experience, with a clear emphasis on coaching as the core focus throughout both years.

In Year 1, students will begin by exploring the wide range of careers available in the sports industry and the importance of health and wellbeing. The cornerstone of the year is Unit C1: Developing Coaching Skills, where learners gain essential coaching experience through planning, delivering, and reviewing sessions. Additional units introduce students to the principles of sports development, self-employment, and the practical application of sport.

Year 1 Units:

  • Unit A: Careers in Sport

  • Unit B: Health and Wellbeing

  • Unit C1: Developing Coaching Skills

  • Unit 1: Sports Development

  • Unit 2: Self Employment in Sport and Physical Activity

  • Unit 12: Practical Sports Application

In Year 2, the focus moves to refining and applying coaching skills in real-world environments through Unit D1: Applied Coaching Skills. Students will also complete a substantial Research Project, and have the opportunity to explore optional areas such as sports psychology, anatomy and physiology, fitness training, and the impact of technology on sport.

  • Unit 3: Sports Psychology

  • Unit 5: Anatomy and Physiology

  • Unit 9: Fitness Training

  • Unit 13: Influence of Technology in Sport and Physical Activity

To study a BTEC level 3 course, students are required to achieve a minimum of five GCSEs at grade 4 or above including Maths & English.

100% internal assessment, one unit is a Pearson Set Assessment (PSA). Class content is designed around the criteria the learners will need to show an understanding of within the assignments. Within lessons learners will participate in tasks that encourage the learner to produce work in line with the command words for each criteria.

  • BSc in Sport related subjects (Sports Coaching, SportsTherapy, Sports Nutrition, Sports Psychology)
  • BA (Hons) Sport related subjects (Sports Management, Sport and Physical Education, Physical Activity and Sport
  • Employment as assistant coaches within sporting franchise (E.g. Shooting Starz)
  • Employment as Teaching Support staff within PE departments in Schools
  • Trainee PE teacher
  • Apprenticeships
  • Scholarship abroad
