This two-year BTEC course is ideal for school leavers who are passionate about sport and aspire to pursue a career in coaching or wider roles within the sports industry. With a strong focus on practical coaching skills, the programme offers a clear progression into higher education or direct employment in sport and leisure sectors.

In Year 1, students will explore the breadth of career opportunities within the sports industry and develop an understanding of health and wellbeing. The core of the year is centred around Unit C1: Developing Coaching Skills, where learners will begin building the fundamental skills needed to plan, deliver and review coaching sessions.

Year 1 Units:

  • Unit A: Careers in Sport

  • Unit B: Health and Wellbeing

  • Unit C1: Developing Coaching Skills

In Year 2, the focus shifts to applying those coaching skills in real-world settings, along with a deeper understanding of how sport is developed at a community and national level. Students will also learn about self-employment – essential for those looking to become freelance coaches – and explore anatomy and physiology to better understand athlete performance.

Year 2 Units:

  • Unit D1: Applied Coaching Skills

  • Unit 1: Sports Development

  • Unit 2: Self Employment in Sport and Physical Activity

  • Unit 5: Anatomy and Physiology

To study a BTEC level 3 course, students are required to achieve a minimum of five GCSEs at grade 4 or above including Maths & English.

  • Celebration evening at the Black Country Living Museum to Celebrate the student’s participation in a project run by United By 2022 through Warwickshire Cricket club
  • Visit from Newman University to discuss options with our students
  • Visit to Birmingham City Football Club Academy to discuss employment prospects within elite sporting academies

100% internal assessment. Class content is designed around the criteria the learners will need to show an understanding of within the assignments. Within lessons learners will participate in tasks that encourage the learner to produce work in line with the command words for each criterion.

  • BSc and BA in Sport related subjects (Physiotherapy, Sports Coaching, Sports Therapy, Sports Nutrition, Sports Psychology, Sports Management, Sport and Physical Education, Physical Activity and Sport)
  • Undergraduate degrees in non-sport subjects (E.g Law, Economics, Biomedical Science)
  • Employment as assistant coaches within sporting franchise (E.g. Shooting Starz)
  • Employment as Teaching Support staff within PE departments in Schools
  • Trainee PE teacher
  • Apprenticeships
  • Scholarship abroad
