Who is this course for?
This course is designed for school leavers with strong GCSE results who are aiming to progress to university to study Engineering or wish to be considered for an advanced skills apprenticeship.

This course is equivalent two an A Level.

Course Overview:
This is a challenging and academically rigorous programme that focuses heavily on theoretical concepts. It is ideal for dedicated and motivated students who are serious about pursuing a career in engineering.

Qualification:
Extended Certificate (360 Guided Learning Hours)

Course Content:
Students will complete a combination of mandatory and optional units, including external assessments and non-exam assessment (NEA).

This course provides a strong foundation in core engineering principles and practical skills, preparing students for higher education or advanced apprenticeships in the engineering sector.

Modules:

Mandatory units:

F130: Principles of engineering

F131: Materials science and technology

F132: Engineering in practice

And two optional units from:

F133: Computer aided design (CAD)

F134: Programmable electronics

F135: Mechanical product design

F136: Computer aided manufacture (CAM)

F137: Electrical devices and circuits

Facilities:

Students on this course benefit from state of the art equipment, 3D printers, Electronic Modelling Software and specialist workshops.

To study a BTEC level 3 course, students are required to achieve a minimum of five GCSEs at grade 4 or above including Maths & English. For Engineering, you will also need to achieve a minimum of two grade 5s in Science GCSE as well as a grade 6 in Maths (a grade 5 Maths will be considered alongside a strong profile).

There will be 2 exams and a coursework project.

 

The Engineering AAQ Extended Certificate is an excellent stepping stone to a wide range of exciting opportunities in the engineering field. Upon successful completion, students typically progress to one of the following:

1. University
The course provides the essential academic grounding needed for higher education. You’ll be well-prepared to apply for engineering-related degree courses such as:

  • Mechanical Engineering

  • Electrical or Electronic Engineering

  • Civil Engineering

  • Aerospace Engineering

  • Robotics or Mechatronics

  • Materials Science

2. Higher or Degree Apprenticeships
This qualification is also ideal for those wishing to pursue an advanced skills or degree apprenticeship. These pathways allow you to earn a wage while gaining further qualifications and industry experience with leading engineering firms.

3. Employment in the Engineering Sector
With a solid foundation in both theoretical and practical engineering, you could progress into a junior technician or trainee role within an engineering company. Roles may include:

  • CAD Technician

  • Engineering Operative

  • Electrical or Mechanical Engineering Technician
