The aim of the course is to explore the underlying framework of the law and learn and apply key areas. You will study four units including Dispute Solving in Civil Law, Investigating Aspects of Criminal Law and the Legal System, Applying the Law and Aspects of Family Law. Upon completion of the course, you will have an understanding of the law, know the different non-fatal offences, advise about a murder case and describe how laws are made and applied.

During your studies you will also develop key skills. There will be opportunities for you to develop essential employability skills including problem-solving, communication, negotiation, self-management, resilience and presentation. If you are looking to enter Higher Education then the course provides skills that are vital for success at university including the ability to learn independently, the ability to research actively and methodically and being able to give presentations.

Modules:

Year 1:

Unit 1: Dispute Solving in the Legal System
Unit 2: Investigating Aspects of Criminal Law and the Legal System

Year 2:

Unit 3: Applying the Law
Unit 7: Aspects of Tort

To study a BTEC level 3 course, students are required to achieve a minimum of five GCSEs at grade 4 or above including Maths & English.

Students on this course can benefit from:

  • Court Visits – trips to observe real criminal or civil cases at Magistrates’ Courts, Crown Courts, or County Courts.
  • Guest Speaker Sessions – talks from practising solicitors and barristers
  • Crown Prosecution Service – Enrichment/work experience

  • SCG Simulated law centre – work experience

Applied Law is assessed with a combination of internal and external exams using the grade framework (A to E). Students must pass each module to gain the award.

 

Students can progress to University or some career routes include:

  • Probation and Prison Service: Understanding the legal system is important for these roles.
  • Company Secretary: Ensuring a company complies with legal requirements.
  • Patent Attorney: Requires specialized knowledge of intellectual property law.
  • Law Costs Lawyer: Deals with the calculation and recovery of legal costs.
  • Licenced Conveyancer: Specializes in property law and conveyancing.
  • Trade Mark Attorney:   in the police force, legal secretary, court clerk, journalist, or even human resources.
  • Legal Secretary: Legal secretaries provide administrative support to lawyers and legal professionals.
  • Court Clerk: Court clerks assist with the smooth functioning of court proceedings.
  • Social Work: Social workers often deal with legal frameworks related to child protection and social care.
  • Business and Accounting: A good grasp of contract law, corporate law, and other legal principles is valuable in these fields.
