The Level 2 Diploma in Sports Industry Skills is designed for school leavers who are passionate about sport and physical activity and are interested in starting a career in the sport and active leisure sector. This one-year, fully mandatory qualification equips students with the essential skills, knowledge and professional behaviours expected by employers in the industry. You can do this course whilst improving on your GCSE results.

Throughout the course, learners will explore a wide range of key areas, including how people participate in sport, the different career roles available, and how to work effectively in school and community sports environments. The course places a strong emphasis on developing leadership skills, particularly in working with children, and includes practical opportunities to plan and deliver sports activity sessions.

Course Content:

  • Unit 1: Working in the Sport and Active Leisure Industry 
    Learn about job roles, employment opportunities, and key behaviours expected in the sports industry.

  • Unit 2: Physical and Sports Education in School and Community Settings 
    Understand the school environment, the National Curriculum, and how physical activity supports child development.

  • Unit 3: Sports Leadership 
    Gain essential leadership skills, with a focus on becoming an effective and responsible children’s sports leader.

  • Unit 4: Working as a Sports Leader 
    Plan, lead, and review children’s sports activity sessions while developing a clear understanding of relevant legislation and safeguarding practices.

To study an Access course, students are required to achieve a minimum of a grade 3 in English & Maths GCSE, alongside another two grade 3s at GCSE.

  • Planning and running Kings Norton Primary School’s Sports day for Unit 4
  • Guest speakers from an array of sporting vocations
  • Celebration evening at the Black Country Living Museum to Celebrate the student’s participation in a project run by United By 2022 through Warwickshire Cricket club
  • Visit to Birmingham City Football Club Academy to discuss employment prospects within elite sporting academies

All units are internally assessed through assignments that allow learners to apply knowledge and demonstrate practical skills in realistic scenarios. Assignments are guided by national standards and can be adapted to suit local contexts. All units must be passed to achieve the qualification.

Synoptic Assessment

Unit 4: Working as a Sports Leader is the main synoptic assessment, completed towards the end of the course. It requires learners to apply knowledge and skills gained throughout the programme by taking on the role of a sports leader in a realistic setting, demonstrating teamwork, safety, and leadership in a sport and leisure environment.

The qualification gives you a sound basis to progress to a Level 3 qualification, when studied in a full study programme, such as the BTEC Level 3 National in Sport Coaching and Development, the BTEC Level 3 National in Sport, Fitness and Personal Training Business and the BTEC Level 3 National in Sport and Outdoor Activities.
