This creative and hands-on course offers an exciting pathway into key areas of textile design, including silk-screen printing, fabric dyeing, batik, embroidery, weaving, and fabric manipulation.

You’ll explore textiles in imaginative ways, producing original work across fashion, interior design, exhibition pieces, and textile art. Each project encourages you to develop your own ideas in response to a brief, with inspiration drawn from both contemporary and historical textile practices.

The course supports progression to university-level art and design courses or careers in the creative industries, such as fashion, costume, interiors, or surface design.

Modules:

  • Colour studies and designing for Textiles
  • Sketchbook work.
  • Techniques and processes ; Dyeing, silkscreen printing, batiking, painting, tie-dye fabric
  • Woven and constructed fabrics/ felt making
  • Manipulated/ embroidered fabrics
  • Contemporary and historical investigation of Textile Artists/Designers/ Artists
  • Design development of ideas, sketches, fashion illustration.
  • Analysis/annotating creative thinking and processes
  • Producing final Textile Design work

To study an A Level students are required to achieve a minimum of five GCSEs at grade 4 or above including Maths & English, with at least two at a grade 6. For Textiles, you will also need to achieve a minimum a grade 5 at GCSE in Art or a Distinction in BTEC Art & Design.

Year 1: A coursework assessment and final overall mark /grade

Year 2:  60% coursework and 40% exam preparation and externally set paper.

The majority of our Textiles alumni go on to study Fashion Design and Textile Design university degrees, with business and marketing becoming an increasingly popular choice. Birmingham City University and Coventry University provide our students with portfolio workshops.
