A-Level Spanish is suitable for students who have already studied Spanish at GCSE level and want to deepen their understanding of the language and culture. It’s particularly well-suited for those who plan to pursue higher education in fields like Modern Languages, International Relations, or Business, or those interested in careers involving translation, interpreting, or working in Spanish-speaking countries.

This course builds upon GCSE skills, aiming to develop proficiency in all four language areas: listening, reading, speaking, and writing. Students explore Hispanic society, culture, and politics, including studying prescribed texts and films. The course also emphasises understanding contemporary issues and multiculturalism within Spanish-speaking communities.

Year 1:

-Aspects of Hispanic society: current trends

1.La familia 2. El ciberespacio 3. La igualdad de los sexos 4. La influencia de los ídolos

-Artistic culture in the Hispanic world

  1. La identidad regional en España 6. El patrimonio cultural

-Cultural topic : “La Casa de Bernarda Alba” ( play)

 

Year 2:

– Multiculturalism inHispanic society

  1. La inmigración 8. El racismo 9. La convivencia

– Aspect of political life in the Hispanic world

  1. Jóvenes de hoy, ciudadanos del mañana 11. Monarquías y dictaduras 12. Movimientos populares

-Cultural topic: “El Laberinto del Fauno” (film)

To study an A Level students are required to achieve a minimum of five GCSEs at grade 4 or above including Maths & English, with at least two at a grade 6. For Spanish, you will also need to achieve a minimum of a grade 7 at GCSE Spanish. Native speakers will be considered and are encouraged to apply.

The languages department have a huge range of activities such as:

  • Language mentor roles – to offer students the opportunity to take responsibility, show leadership, etc.
  • Department picnics – informal gatherings for students of all languages to meet each other, eat together and celebrate our community life
  • Trips to local universities (Coventry Uni – October, Birmingham Uni – March) · Help with UCAS & personal statements (especially useful for non-UK students, who do not know the system.
  • Foreign language workshops (La Casa de Bernarda Alba – Spanish)
  • Foreign language films · Language festivals and celebrations: ( 26th Sept European Day of Languages – German taster lesson, 6th October Coventry University Languages Festival , 7th October National Poetry Day – poems on display on ground floor corridor of North block)
  • Introduction to linguistics. · Revision sessions · Competitions – national translation competitions : Stephen Spender Schools’ Laureate, Anthea Bell Prize, Oxford University’s MFL short story competition
  • Lunchtime sessions – topics include: o selecting language courses for university, o taster sessions in typical undergraduate language courses (eg etymology, phonetics, linguistics, etc.), o ab initio language tasters,
  • GCSE entry-level Latin
  • Spanish for beginners
  • International trips to Málaga, Madrid, Paris, Brussels, Napoli, Verona

PAPER 1 : Listening , Reading and translation. 50%

PAPER 2: Written exams ( 2 essays based on Cultural topics) 20%

PAPER 3: Speaking exam ( Response to stimulus card+ IRP)  30%

Speakers of modern languages bring with them many transferable skills as well as cultural awareness, and are highly valued by employers in jobs such as international sales and marketing, business, journalism, teaching, the tourist industry, translation & interpreting, and the Diplomatic Service.
