Considering questions that are fundamental to our existence like: do humans have a soul, or is the concept of a morality really just a social invention? You will explore and discuss ideas in depth by constructing and deconstructing powerful arguments. This is your opportunity to broaden your intellectual horizons and gain a thorough grounding in key concepts and themes, enabling you to form your own judgements.

Philosophy A Level Course Outline

You will cover topics such as:

What is ‘knowledge’?
The limits of knowledge
Applied ethics
The concept and nature of ‘God’
Arguments relating to the existence of God
The problem of evil
What do we mean by ‘mind’?
Physicalism, mind-brain type identity theory, eliminative materialism
Functionalism

To study an A Level students are required to achieve a minimum of five GCSEs at grade 4 or above including Maths & English, with at least two at a grade 6. For Philosophy, you will also need to achieve a minimum of GCSE English 6. This subject cannot be studied alongside Religious Studies.

Philosophy is recognised by top universities as one of the most intellectually challenging A Levels. Honing your skills of analysis and your ability to construct solid arguments, the course is ideal preparation for most academic university courses and employment schemes.
