Considering questions that are fundamental to our existence like: do humans have a soul, or is the concept of a morality really just a social invention? You will explore and discuss ideas in depth by constructing and deconstructing powerful arguments. This is your opportunity to broaden your intellectual horizons and gain a thorough grounding in key concepts and themes, enabling you to form your own judgements.

Philosophy A Level Course Outline

You will cover topics such as:

  • What is ‘knowledge’?
  • The limits of knowledge
  • Applied ethics
  • The concept and nature of ‘God’
  • Arguments relating to the existence of God
  • The problem of evil
  • What do we mean by ‘mind’?
  • Physicalism, mind-brain type identity theory, eliminative materialism
  • Functionalism

To study an A Level students are required to achieve a minimum of five GCSEs at grade 4 or above including Maths & English, with at least two at a grade 6. For Philosophy, you will also need to achieve a minimum of GCSE English 6. This subject cannot be studied alongside Religious Studies.

Philosophy is recognised by top universities as one of the most intellectually challenging A Levels.
