A-Level French is suitable for students who have already studied French at GCSE level and want to deepen their understanding of the language and culture. It is particularly well-suited to those who plan to pursue higher education in fields like Modern Languages, International Relations, or Business, or those interested in careers involving translation, interpreting, or working in francophone countries.

The A-Level French course builds upon GCSE skills, aiming to develop proficiency in all four traditional language areas: listening, reading, speaking, and writing, as well as introducing the component of translation (English to French and French to English) Students explore francophone society, culture, and politics, including studying prescribed texts and films. The course also emphasizes understanding contemporary issues and multiculturalism within the francophone world.

Year 1:

Aspects of French-speaking society: current trends

  1. The changing nature of family (La famille en voie de changement)
  2. The ‘cyber-society’ (La « cyber-société »)
  3. The place of voluntary work (Le rôle du bénévolat)

Political and Artistic culture in the French-speaking world

  1. A culture proud of its heritage (Une culture fière de son patromoine)
  2. Contemporary francophone music (La musique francophone contemporaine)
  3. Cinema : the 7th Art form (Le cinema: le 7e art)

Cultural topic: Film – Au Revoir, les Enfants

Year 2:

Aspects of French-speaking society: current issues

  1. Positive features of a diverse society (Les aspects positifs d’une société diverse)
  2. Life for the marginalised (Quelle vie pour les marginalisés ?)
  3. How criminal are treated (Comment on traite les criminels)

Aspects of Political life in the French-speaking world

  1. Teenagers, the right to vote and political commitment (Les ados, le droit de vote et l’engagement politique)
  2. Demonstrations & strikes, who holds the power? (Manifestations et grèves, à qui le pouvoir ?)
  3. Politics and Immigration (La politique et l’Immigration)

Cultural Topic : Novel – Un Sac de Billes

To study an A Level students are required to achieve a minimum of five GCSEs at grade 4 or above including Maths & English, with at least two at a grade 6. For French, you will also need to achieve a grade 7 in French at GCSE.

Students on this course benefit from a range of enrichment, including:

  • International trips to Málaga, Madrid, Paris, Brussels, Napoli, Verona

PAPER 1 : Listening , Reading and translation. 50%

PAPER 2: Written exams ( 2 essays based on Cultural topics) 20%

PAPER 3: Speaking exam ( Response to stimulus card+ IRP)  30%

 

1:1 Speaking support is provided throughout the 2 year course, with weekly individual sessions
