During the English Literature A Level you will explore how authors view and write about the world. If you enjoy reading, this course offers the opportunity to develop your interests and analytical skills. You will experience social and protest writing plus a range of teaching and learning methods, combined with visits to the theatre.

You will study novels (including the modern novel) plays (including Shakespeare) and poetry.

Modules:

Year 1:

You will study the theme of Love Through the Ages. Our texts are F Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, Daphne Du Maurier’s Rebecca, Shakespeare’s Measure for Measure and a selection of pre-1900 poetry. You will also work towards an unseen prose analysis task.

Year 2:

You will continue to study your first year texts, adding Kathryn Stockett’s The Help, Tennessee Williams’ ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’ and selected poems of Seamus Heaney. You will also be asked to compare two unseen poems.

You will also complete a 2500 word coursework essay, comparing two texts of your choice on a chosen theme.

To study an A Level students are required to achieve a minimum of five GCSEs at grade 4 or above including Maths & English with at least two at a grade 6. For English Literature, you will also need to achieve a minimum of a grade 5 in GCSE English Language and 5 in Literature and a grade 6 in an essay-based subject.

Students on this course have been to theatre visits such as Shakespeare’s Globe in London, literary workshops e.g. with the Royal Shakespeare Company and have heard from visiting speakers e.g. from Birmingham University.
