A-level Chemistry is a course that builds on the learning in GCSE Science. It is particularly suited to students who want to develop essential knowledge, develop a deep appreciation of the skills, knowledge and understanding of scientific method as well as competence and confidence in a variety of practical, mathematical and problem solving skills. Students will develop their interest in and enthusiasm for Chemistry and understand how society makes decisions about scientific issues.

Course Outline

A 2- year linear course split in to 6 modules.

Module 1 – development of practical skills in chemistry

  • Practical skills assessed in a written examination
  • Practical skills asses in the practical endorsement

Module 2 – Foundations in Chemistry

  • Atoms, compounds, molecules and equations
  • Amount of substance
  • Acid-base and redox reactions
  • Electrons, bonding and structure

Module 3 – Periodic table and energy

  • The periodic table and periodicity
  • Group 2 and halogens
  • Quantitative analysis
  • Enthalpy changes
  • Reaction rates and equilibrium (qualitative)

Module 4 – Core organic chemistry

  • Basic concepts
  • Hydrocarbons
  • Alcohols and haloalkanes
  • Organic synthesis
  • Analytical techniques (IR and MS)

Module 5 – Physical chemistry and transition elements

  • Reaction rates and equilibrium (quantitative)
  • pH and buffers
  • Enthalpy, entropy and free energy
  • Redox and electrode potentials
  • Transition elements

Module 6 – Organic chemistry and analysis

  • Aromatic compounds
  • Carbonyl compounds
  • Carboxylic acids and esters
  • Nitrogen compounds
  • Polymers
  • Organic synthesis
  • Chromatography and spectroscopy (NMR)

To study an A Level students are required to achieve a minimum of five GCSEs at grade 4 or above including Maths & English, with at least two at a grade 6. For Chemistry, you will also need to achieve at least two grade 6s in Science, as well as GCSE Maths at Grades 6 or above.

Students are given the opportunity of visits and trips to expand their knowledge relevant to the course content such as Chemistry Challenge and Chemistry Olympiad.

This course is 100% exam assessment

AS students will be assessed on Modules 1-4 via two 90 minute papers (Breadth in Chemistry and Depth in Chemistry, which will give the AS grade. You will be assessed by a variety of methods during the course. There will be regular class tests, homework, practical activities and research tasks.

At the end of the A2 year, there are 3 written exams, one of which is a synoptic paper.

There is no coursework. A practical endorsement is reported separately if the core experiments are completed.

Chemistry is a versatile subject that develops many important skills which are valued and recognised by both potential employers and universities. If you are interested in studying any medical based subject, for example, Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy or Veterinary Science, a good grade in A Level Chemistry is a compulsory requirement. Chemistry graduates are highly sought after in a wide range of careers.
