If you love being creative and making visual art, this course is for you. A Level Fine Art is ideal for students interested in pursuing a creative career – whether that’s as an artist, designer, curator, art educator, therapist, or working in film and TV.

You’ll develop skills in drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, photography and digital art, preparing you for progression into the creative industries. We encourage personal expression and experimentation, helping you build a unique artistic voice and a strong portfolio of work, which culminates in a final exhibition.

Lessons include hands-on workshops, independent projects, group activities and one-to-one tutorials. Peer feedback and presenting your work are key parts of the course, helping to grow your confidence and communication skills.

Most of your grade comes from coursework, and you’ll be expected to commit at least five hours per week to independent study.

Modules:

  • Observational drawing, line drawing, tone drawing in a variety of media (pencil, biro, ink, pastel, charcoal)
  • Painting (acrylic, oil, watercolour)
  • Printmaking (linocut, monoprint, screen printing, sgraffito)
  • Collage
  • Critical analysis of artwork
  • Visual communication in the presentation of a sketchbook
  • Verbal communication when articulating ideas to a group during peer feedback
  • How to generate ideas using mind maps, mood boards, and drawing
  • How to take successful, relevant photos
  • IT skills, how to print, photocopy, and edit imagery
  • Correct use, clearing, and storage of art materials

To study an A Level students are required to achieve a minimum of five GCSEs at grade 4 or above including Maths & English, with at least two at a grade 6. For Art, you will also need to achieve a grade 5 at GCSE Art or a Merit in BTEC Art & Design and/or along with a suitable portfolio.
