The Health & Social Care (Certificate) BTEC gives you all the personal skills, values and attributes you need to give you a solid foundation for a career in healthcare, nursing or social work. You’ll cover important theory around empathy and equality to help you really understand what you need to work successfully as a Health and Social Care professional, and a platform for understanding individuals and learning how to provide quality care.

This is a very dynamic course exploring a variety of current topics from human life span development, human behaviour, communication and health promotion to child protection and safeguarding.

The course is equivalent to one A Level and allows you to present your coursework in different ways, such as live presentations to class, role play scenarios, video production or poster design, so you can showcase and express your units creatively. This qualification attracts the same UCAS points as an A Level course and can be studied alongside A Level subjects or BTEC qualifications where possible.

Staff have worked recently in the Health and Social Care field which brings really relevant industry knowledge to your studies and contributes to our excellent results. You also have the opportunity to replace one of your optional units with a work placement which we can help you set up.

For the enthusiasts wanting to pursue a health and social career it is a platform for understanding individuals, learning how to provide quality care, to the skills needed to become a health, social care or child development specialist. The course is equivalent to one A Level, if studied over two years. This new and exciting course can be studied alongside A Level subjects or BTEC qualifications.

1. Human Lifespan and Development

2. Human Biology and Health

3. Principles of Health and Social Care Practice

Optional Units:

Unit 4: Health, Policy and wellbeing

Unit 5 Promoting Health and Education

Unit 6 Safe Environment in Health and Social Care

Unit 7: Health and Science

Designed to prepare students for higher education, apprenticeships, or employment in the health and social care sector.

Skills Development:

Develops applied knowledge and practical skills in health and social care, as well as cultural and social intelligence.

To study a BTEC level 3 course, students are required to achieve a minimum of five GCSEs at grade 4 or above including Maths & English.

On this course, students benefit from guest speakers, Work experience, getting involved in Health Awareness Campaign Days, First Aid and CPR Training, University Taster Days and much more!

The units are assessed through the completion of coursework and examinations.

Coursework (BTEC Pearson)
Coursework is assessed through many forms which can include written, presentations, video recording, role plays, posters, promotions and scenarios. There will be two coursework assessments.

Examination (BTEC Pearson)
Students will sit two exams across their two years of study. These results will contribute to 50% of their final grade.

With a Level 3 AAQ in Health and Social Care, you have several progression options:

1. Higher Education
Earn UCAS points to apply for degrees in:

  • Nursing, Midwifery, Social Work, Psychology, Counselling, Occupational Therapy, Paramedic Science, Public Health, Youth Work, and more.

2. Apprenticeships
Combine work and study with options like:

  • Nursing Associate (Level 5), Senior Healthcare Support Worker (Level 3), Social Work or Early Years Apprenticeships, Dental Nursing, and Healthcare Science.
    Some lead to degree-level qualifications.

3. Employment
Go straight into supervised roles such as:

  • Healthcare Assistant, Support Worker, Care Worker, Therapy Assistant, Nursery Nurse, or Personal Assistant in care.

4. Specialist Short Courses
Boost your skills and career with CPD training in:

  • Autism, Dementia, Mental Health First Aid, Safeguarding, End of Life Care, and more.

5. Trainee Programmes & Volunteering
Gain experience through:

  • NHS Step into Health, Prince’s Trust programmes, local council schemes, or volunteering in care settings.
